Running The Race

During my sophomore track season, I ran the 800 and was in a neck-and-neck race with a runner from another school. It was one of the last races of the day, and both schools were cheering us on to the finish. I lost by a nose, but it was a great experience. We both spurred each other to run faster. Though I lost, I benefited from the increased competition, as did the other runner.

More than 48,500 runners compete in the Chicago Marathon, and there is one male and one female winner, which means there are approximately 48,498 losers. Still, if you talk to anyone who finishes a marathon, they are far from a loser. The competition and comradery of running a race are exhilarating and life-changing, producing thousands of winners.

Most people view competition as a binary event – winners and losers. However, a good race or game can benefit all participants. Whether you win or lose, it’s possible to gain experience and wisdom from each endeavor.

I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. ~ 2 Timothy 4:7
