Downsizing

My wife and I downsized in 2013, probably too much. Our home was one of the smallest in our subdivision, and I was disappointed and regretted our decision. We gave up our pool, extra rooms, and canyon view. McMansions surrounded our home.

A few months after we moved into our new home, I went to Nicaragua with several men from my church. We delivered food, helped with a few projects, and hosted a men’s retreat. Most of the people we served had nothing. Their “homes” were cinder blocks, tin roofs, and dirt floors without running water or electricity.

One gentleman lived in an abandoned coffee bean storage shed. He lit fires in the corner of his shed, a few feet from his makeshift bed, to keep warm. At church, he was the first to rise and offer his tithe, a few coins.

My trip to Nicaragua was humbling. I realized my new home was more than enough. It provided shelter inside a safe neighborhood with modern-day comforts that I took for granted. I felt blessed when I returned to my little abode.

If you feel down or low with your current situation, consider serving others with nothing. Serve those who can’t afford to pay you back. Serve with gratitude and an open heart. It will change your perspective.

Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. ~ 1 Thessalonians 5:18
