Consultants

I struggle with motivational speakers, consultants, coaches, and self-help gurus, especially those who have not succeeded in their careers. I’ve attended countless corporate meetings with a lineup of hyped-up professional speakers, and, in the short term, it’s an adrenaline boost, but it always wears off. The speakers are polished and appear to say the right thing, but there is no accountability or follow-up. They don’t have any skin in the game.

I prefer the trial-and-error method. I like to learn by doing, and experience is the best teacher. I can listen to speakers about fly fishing, but until I put my foot into the river and hurl my cast into the wind, it means nothing. When I first learned to ski, my friend took me to the peak and said, “Good luck, let’s go.” And until you fly over your handlebars, no speaker on earth can simulate how it feels to crash on a mountain bike.

However, I read countless books and occasionally watch YouTube videos to set my foundation on a particular subject, but then I can’t wait to jump into action.

Who knows, if I employed a heavy diet of speakers, consultants, and coaches, my net worth would probably be 10x larger, but I doubt it.

Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. ~ Matthew 7:15
